Officials have released more details about the car crash that killed Carlos and Jennifer Mugica, a beloved couple on the Rey Feo court, near Flatonia, on Friday, June 12.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to the deadly crash on Interstate 10 in Fayette County, between 90 and 100 miles east of San Antonio, around 2:26 p.m. on Friday. The preliminary investigation found that Carlos, 54, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee with his wife, Jennifer, 46, when, for unknown reasons, the Jeep drove onto the right shoulder and struck the rear of a trailer being towed by a semi-truck. The semi-truck and its two trailers were parked on the shoulder due to mechanical issues prior to the crash.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the crash, but the Mugicas were both pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Carlos was born and raised in San Antonio and worked as a realtor with LPT Realty, in addition to serving on the Castle Hills Zoning Commission. Recently serving as transportation minister for the Rey Feo Scholarship, both he and Jennifer championed education and opening doors for all people, according to his Rey Feo bio page.
Jennifer was working as an assistant principal at Longfellow Middle School at the time of her death and had previously served the same role at Woodlawn Academy and San Antonio ISD’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy. Tributes from multiple schools with SAISD have poured in following the news.

This is a profound loss that comes far too soon. Carlos and Jennifer were a young, vibrant, and generous couple whose impact on San Antonio and beyond will be felt for generations. Their commitment to serving others was unwavering, and they gave so much of themselves to the community they loved.
While many will remember Carlos and Jennifer for their dedication to public service and philanthropy, those closest to them knew that service was only one part of who they were. Carlos was, first and foremost, a devoted father, a loving grandfather to a new grand baby, and a cherished son. Together, Carlos and Jennifer built a life centered on family, compassion, and a sincere desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
