LUBBOCK, Texas (KLTV) – Texas Tech will not have Brendan Sorsby as their quarterback this season. The quarterback announced he will enter the NFL supplemental draft.
The decision comes hours after the Big 12 filed a lawsuit against Texas Tech for the right to enforce league policy. A week ago, a district judge overruled the league’s decision to suspend Sorsby for the season, instead handing down a two-game suspension and continued treatment for his diagnosed gambling addiction.
Sorsby gambled $90,000 while at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech. Big 12 teams threatened to boycott playing Texas Tech.
Jim Rosson, an abuse treatment counselor out of Lubbock, said gambling provides more excitement for patients dealing with addiction.
“There is someone who is not dealing with this pathology like you are. It is not going to respond similarly to that excitement. It’s never enough. There’s a tolerance, and there are withdrawal, and then there’s escalating for more and more of it. And that is the addictive pattern in the addiction brain,” Rosson said. “Part of that treatment is also getting this out in the open and having the focus beyond the problem. So often times with addiction these things live in the dark, and end up in seclusion. So having the problem, it sounds cliché, is admitting there’s a problem, getting family and friends to surround someone and make sure that they are held accountable for their negative actions. But also that they followed through on the treatment. So in a way this may be a good thing for him in the long-term that he is being held accountable and moving forward with that treatment.”
