Texas Tech, BYU alumni partner for book drive

  • November 4, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – “BYU has a motto: ‘Enter to learn, go forth to serve,’ and as alumni we really take that to heart, the idea of going and serving the community.”

Kim Marsh is the BYU alumni Lubbock chapter chair. She says the power of collaboration goes a long way in making that saying prove true.

“As a BYU alumna and someone who lives in Lubbock, it was really important for me to serve this community,” Marsh said. “We’ve lived here for about five years and have fallen in love with the people of West Texas. They are just the greatest, they have big hearts and they love their people, and we thought if we collaborate with Tech, it’s the best of both worlds.”

This collaboration is part of BYU’s “Cougs Care”. During away football games, BYU alumni chapters take part in projects to serve the communities they’re visiting.

As the Cougars visit Lubbock this week, the project is a book drive that benefits Literacy Lubbock. Chris Richards, president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Lubbock chapter, says after Marsh reached out, Texas Tech wanted to go one step further.

“Everyone wanted to help and see what they could do to help out, so we decided to make this a week-long event to raise just that much more for Literacy Lubbock. It’s a great organization,” Richards said.

Literacy Lubbock board member Beth Tucker says this book drive will go a long way in helping so many residents.

“We were super excited because the book drive is a huge thing,” Tucker said. “Annually, we give about 8,000 books back into the community. One of our primary goals is to have books in the home, so that way kids can have a grade-level reading, as well as continue that for adults.”

As BYU and Texas Tech get set to face off on the gridiron, they are happy to partner up for this extended book drive, because community comes first.
