Texas Tech women’s soccer lost in a penalty shootout against Baylor University on Monday in Fort Worth during the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament.
Regulation play finished in a 1-1 tie after Baylor senior defender Hannah Augustyn scored a goal in the 54th minute to equalize the score after Tech redshirt sophomore midfielder Sam Courtwright scored a goal during the second minute. Both sides were unable to score again, forcing overtime.
Tech put one shot on goal throughout the 20 minutes of overtime. Baylor put three shots on goal which all were saved by Tech senior goalkeeper Faith Nyguen.
The overtime tie forced a penalty shootout which lasted nine attempts. Tech led the penalty shootout for the first three attempts until junior midfielders Skylar Haase and Kate Leibel missed consecutive kicks.
Following Tech’s two misses, the teams traded goals until the ninth round when Baylor senior goalkeeper Azul Alvarez saved Tech sophomore Sophie Neves’ attempt. Senior goalkeeper Ashlee Zirkel took advantage of the opportunity and scored Baylor’s ninth attempt.
Baylor won the shootout 7-6 and will move on to play the winner of the No. 1 seed Texas Christian University and No. 8 seed Brigham Young University matchup.
The loss marks the first time Baylor has beat Tech since 2021, according to Tech Athletics.
The selection show for the 2025 Women’s Soccer Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, will take place Monday.
