Thrill-seekers at Six Flags Over Texas will be able to ride the park’s newest record-breaking dive coaster as soon as next week. Tormenta Rampaging Run is set to open on Friday, June 26, in time for the park’s 65th anniversary in August.
The Arlington attraction is marketed as the first-ever “giga dive coaster.” Giga coasters top out at over 300 feet, while dive coasters are known to pause before dropping riders into a vertical plunge.
The ride is situated in the park’s Spain area and will accompany a new Spanish village called Rancho de la Tormenta.
As the attraction’s story goes, the name “tormenta” was initially derived from storms that swept across the village plains, per a statement from Six Flags Entertainment Corp. But it evolved to signify the “fierce strength and incredible speed” of a bull that became a symbol of the town’s resilience — and the coaster’s namesake. Vibrant decorations and other entertainment options within the Rancho de la Tormenta section celebrate the “Festival Taurino,” which honors the fictional village’s ranch hands.
The titular coaster has six world records under its belt.
At a height of 309 feet and track length of 4,199 feet with a top speed of 87 miles per hour, Tormenta will be the world’s tallest, longest and fastest dive coaster.
Several of the ride’s features take home their own titles. Tormenta has the highest beyond-vertical drop, so named because it is steeper than a straight-down 90-degree fall. At the start of the ride, adrenaline junkies will perch 285 feet in the air for three seconds before plummeting at a 95-degree angle.
The rest of the ride is a series of high-speed twists and turns. Tormenta boasts the tallest vertical loop of any coaster type at 179 feet, and the world’s highest Immelmann inversion at 218 feet. The fighter jet-like maneuver brings riders up a vertical loop — taking them upside-down at the apex before spinning them back upright as they race back down in the opposite direction.
“Tormenta: Rampaging Run is set to forever change not only the Arlington skyline, but the full lineup of thrills only offered at Six Flags Over Texas,” Pete Carmichael, park president of Six Flags Over Texas, said in a statement.
Visitors can access the park with a daily pass starting at $39 or season passes starting at $70. Six Flags Over Texas also offers annual memberships starting at $8 per month.
