Something big is finally coming into focus in one of Texas’ most barbecue-obsessed cities. After months of construction and speculation, Terry Black’s Barbecue has revealed when it hopes to start serving fan-favorite barbecue in New Braunfels.

The Central Texas barbecue chain is targeting a September 23 opening date for its highly anticipated New Braunfels location, Madeline Black, brand manager for Blacks Family Hospitality told MySA via email.

“We are aiming to open our Terry Black’s New Braunfels September 23rd,” Black told MySA in an email. “We are actively in construction and are excited to launch…we are excited to bring Terry Black’s to New Braunfels in the fall.”

The new restaurant is taking shape inside the former Los Cucos Mexican Restaurant, just minutes away from the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, where crews have spent months renovating the property into a large-scale barbecue destination.

Construction remains underway as the opening date approaches. The New Braunfels location will add to Terry Black’s growing portfolio in Texas, joining existing locations in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco and Lockhart. The business also expanded outside of the Lone Star State, with a location in Nashville.

State filings previously revealed plans for a $5 million renovation of the former restaurant. The project includes a nearly 8,000-square-foot barbecue restaurant, an attached pit house and a two-story outdoor dining area. Construction records filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation projected work would wrap up by August 31, though all state filings are subject to change.

The opening has drawn significant attention because of its location just 0.1 mile from Black’s Barbecue, the longtime Lockhart smokehouse tied to the Black family barbecue legacy.

The Black family has been in the barbecue business since 1932, but a family split more than a decade ago led Terry Black and his sons, Mike and Mark Black, to launch Terry Black’s Barbecue in Austin. The expansion into New Braunfels will bring the two brands within walking distance of each other, adding another chapter to one of Texas barbecue’s most well-known family rivalries.

As New Braunfels continues to grow as a destination for smoked meats and Texas cuisine, the arrival of Terry Black’s is expected to add another major player to the city’s already crowded barbecue scene.
