A fire has forced a decades-old Houston sandwich shop to shut its doors. Angelo’z World Best Po’boys has temporarily closed after flames damaged its space at 8057 Kirby Dr. Now, its team is working to recover from what it described as “significant losses.”
Angelo’z, located just north of NRG Stadium, announced the closure on June 8, two days after fire had broken out. In its social media statement, the sandwich shop said it is taking the first steps toward recovery. The restaurant, it said, “represents decades of hard work and dedication.”
According to the post, owner Faustino Escalante began working at Angelo’z in 1989 and purchased the restaurant in 2020 after learning it was for sale.
“After 38 years, this establishment has become far more than a job; it is Faustino’s livelihood and his passion. We are heartbroken by this tragedy and significant losses,” the statement read.
It’s unclear what caused the fire at Angelo’z, or what the full extent of the damage. The restaurant’s team has since set up a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $24,000 to help rebuild the business.
“This is something we were not expecting. There are so many things that were lost in this tragedy meaning that we are unable to tell how long the recovery can take,” Angelo’z wrote. “We are asking for any support possible during this difficult time. Every donation, share, and prayer is a big help. We are truly grateful for your help.”

Not too far from Angelo’z, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is playing out at NRG Stadium. While some restaurants have moved to capitalize on the projected half-million arriving to watch the games and take part in the festivities, the sandwich shop was forced to close less than a week prior to the first match in Houston.
“While this presents new challenges as we approach a significant upcoming event in our city, we remain determined to move forward with integrity,” Angelo’z said.
