The City of Corpus Christi is preparing for its second free sandbag distribution event of the 2026 hurricane season, and this time officials are increasing the number of bags available after the first giveaway drew a large crowd.
City crews distributed 8,000 sandbags during the first event held earlier this month. Officials say all of the bags were handed out in just two hours, highlighting the community’s interest in storm preparedness ahead of the peak of hurricane season.
In response to the demand, the city plans to make 10,000 sandbags available during its next distribution event.
The giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, at the Cabaniss Athletic Complex on Saratoga Boulevard. Distribution will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until supplies run out.
Renee Couture, assistant director of the City’s Public Works Department, said the events are designed to help residents prepare for severe weather and potential flooding.
“As we’ve seen over the recent days, with heavy rainfall over a few days, it could cause some localized flooding,” Couture said. “These events are just trying to be educational to the public and get them ready for the potential of maybe a severe storm.”
Residents will be limited to eight sandbags per vehicle. However, officials say drivers may re-enter the line for additional bags if supplies remain available.
To help keep traffic moving efficiently, the city is asking residents to clear out their truck beds, trailers or trunks before arriving at the distribution site.
The free sandbags are intended to help residents protect their homes and property from flooding during heavy rain and tropical weather events.
