True Religion could open a standalone storefront at Baybrook Mall in Friendswood—about 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston, according to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The filing outlines a $225,000 tenant improvement project for space #1042A, including new walls, storefront, ceiling, lighting, restroom and mechanical upgrades. While details submitted to the TDLR are subject to change, the 2,700 square-foot build-out could begin this September and wrap up by mid-November.
Arlington-based Cortland Morgan Architect is the listed design firm. True Religion did not immediately respond to Chron’s request for comment and the company is not listed on the mall’s official list of stores.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson with Baybrook Mall’s public relations team told Chron they were unable to comment on news and updates.
True Religion currently operates from two other storefronts in the Houston area: one at 5000 Katy Mills Circle in the Katy Mills outlet mall and another at 293000 Hempstead Road in Cypress at the Houston Premium Outlets, according to its website.
The company, founded in 2002 in Los Angeles, is known for its premium denim with signature stitching and bold pocket designs. True Religion describes itself as “unlike any other denim brand in the world.”
The brand has faced financial struggle over the past decade, filing for bankruptcy in 2017 and again in 2020, according to Forbes. True Religion shuttered storefronts in both Houston’s Galleria mall and the Dallas Galleria, among other locations.
True Religion has several other storefronts and outlets across the Lone Star State, including in San Marcos, Allen, San Antonio, Grand Prairie and Mercedes. Other well-known department stores sell the True Religion brand, like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Tillys, JD Sports, Buckle and more.
