Communities across Southeast Texas are marking Juneteenth with parades, festivals, concerts and educational events celebrating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honoring the holiday’s historical significance.
Port Arthur
The City of Port Arthur’s Juneteenth observance includes a series of events running through Friday and Saturday in partnership with community organizations and sponsors.
Friday’s schedule begins with a Juneteenth Brunch at 10 a.m. at 711 Procter St. A Juneteenth Parade will follow at 3:30 p.m. along Procter Street before the Kulture Block Party begins at 5 p.m. on the pavilion grounds.
The celebration continues Saturday with the eighth annual Juneteenth Festival at Sgt. Lucian Adams Park.
This year’s parade grand marshal is Port Arthur native Elandon Roberts, an NFL linebacker and Super Bowl champion. Organizers say the celebration is intended to bring residents and visitors together while recognizing the lasting significance of Juneteenth and highlighting community pride, culture and local talent.
Beaumont
The City of Beaumont will host its annual Juneteenth Celebration from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday inside the Beaumont Civic Center.
The event’s headliner is the Zapp Band, known for hits including “More Bounce to the Ounce” and “Computer Love.” Additional entertainment will be provided by Brian Jack and the Zydeco Gamblers, NuSoul & Blacque Koffee, and the SETX Linesteppers.
Erik Tee of Magic 102.5 will serve as host and DJ throughout the evening.
Families can visit the H-E-B Kids Zone, which will feature games, face painting, crafts and other activities. Food vendors also will be on site.
Admission is free.
Jasper
Jasper County’s Juneteenth Freedom Weekend spans three days and includes community gatherings, educational programs and entertainment.
Friday’s activities begin with a day celebration from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Frost Street Park featuring food, music, vendors and games. A trail ride will depart at 6 p.m. from FM 2799.
Saturday begins with tours of the historic J.H. Rowe/Jasper Colored School from 9 a.m. to noon. A Juneteenth Parade will start at 10 a.m., traveling from Sweetbriar to James Byrd Jr. Park.
Family activities at the park are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a live DJ, vendors, line dancing and food.
The weekend concludes Sunday with a Gospel Musical at 3 p.m. at New Lighthouse Ministries. Organizers will also honor Leon Cauley, followed by a soul food dinner after the service.
Orange
The fifth annual Orange Juneteenth Festival is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Riverside Pavilion, 708 Simmons Drive.
Festival admission, concerts and family activities are free.
Gates open at 5 p.m. both days. The event will feature food, vendors, music and community activities.
Friday night’s entertainment includes Rusty Metoyer from 9:30 p.m. until midnight. Saturday’s music lineup features David Sylvester from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., followed by Lil Nate from 10 p.m. until midnight.
Organizers describe the festival as a community celebration of culture, music and heritage open to residents and visitors alike.
