After losing twice to Texas A&M in April, the Texas baseball team was dealt another loss by the Aggies during the offseason.
On Friday, a source confirmed to the American-Statesman that Texas associate head coach Nolan Cain was leaving for a job at Texas A&M. Cain has spent the past two seasons on Jim Schlossnagle’s coaching staff in Austin.
This news was broken by D1Baseball, which also reported that the Aggies will make Cain one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in college baseball. When Cain arrived at Texas, he signed a two-year contact that paid him $400,000 annually.
Cain, 40, worked with current Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley on Schlossnagle’s staff in College Station from 2022-24. A national champion as a player at LSU, Cain also has a lengthy stint with the Tigers on his coaching résumé. Last month, he was linked to a head-coaching vacancy at Houston that was eventually filled by Lamar’s Will Davis.
With Cain in the dugout, Texas went 90-29 over the past two seasons. The Longhorns won a conference championship in 2025 and then reached the 2026 College World Series.
