High school students experienced the nursing field firsthand at Texas Tech’s new camp, engaging in hands-on activities and discussions with mentors.
ABILENE, Texas — Area High school students got a firsthand look at the nursing profession during the first ever Texas Tech University Nursing Camp in Abilene.
The free camp provided students with hands-on experiences designed to introduce them to the nursing profession and the wide range of skills nurses use every day, taking part in CPR and Stop the Bleed training, telehealth simulations, neonatal assessments, disaster response activities and escape room challenges.
Organizers say the activities were designed to give students a realistic look at nursing while helping them develop critical thinking and teamwork skills.
Jose Flores, one of the students attending the camp, said he enjoyed the variety of experiences offered throughout the day.
“It’s been really cool,” Flores said. “They have separate stations for all different types of stuff and they just give us the rundown. And they provide the opportunity to learn about a lot of different stuff.”
In addition to the hands-on activities, students participated in a panel discussion with TTUHSC School of Nursing mentors, where they had the opportunity to ask questions about nursing school, career pathways and working in the health care field.
The Next Stop Nursing Camp is part of TTUHSC School of Nursing’s ongoing effort to introduce students to nursing careers through engaging, interactive experiences and early exposure to the profession.
