EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The two people who were killed in a rollover crash following a Border Patrol pursuit on Sunday evening, Oct. 12, in West El Paso, have been identified by the El Paso Police Department.
On Sunday, the Special Traffic Investigations (STI) unit was requested to take over a double fatality crash investigation that happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the 2300 block of Paisano.
The initial investigation revealed that Border Patrol agents had initiated a pursuit when they observed multiple subjects running from the border wall and getting into a car, according to police.
The car then fled on Paisano, made a U-turn, and headed west at a high rate of speed. Police added that the driver failed to negotiate a curve, lost control, hit the curb and a light pole, and caused the car to roll over.
Two passengers — 30-year-old Axel Everado Iquic-Sequen of Guatemala, and 22-year-old Manuel Mateo Lopez of Mexico — died at the scene as a result of their injuries sustained in the crash, according to police.

Five other occupants, including the driver, were taken to a local hospital.
A Fire Department spokesperson had confirmed they transported five people to the hospital, all with non-life-threatening injuries (Code 1).
In addition, sources confirm to KTSM that the car in the crash was involved in migrant smuggling.
STI continues to investigate the crash.
The main contributing factor in this crash is the driver fleeing from Border Patrol, according to police.
This is the 49th and 50th traffic fatality as compared to 53 this same time last year.
