Consultancy firm Resonance unveiled its roundup of the 100 best American cities shaping the future of the United States in 2026, with a specific focus on communities that blend residential amenities, visitor appeal, diverse talent pools and long-term investments. For the 2026 edition, Resonance reviewed all 393 metropolitan areas in the U.S. to determine which are most prosperous in economic development, housing affordability, quality of life and innovation.
The results? Texas and California tied for the most cities in Resonance’s Top 10 roundup, with two each. For the Lone Star State, Dallas and Houston ranked the eighth and ninth best cities in America, each praised for their livability, lovability and prosperity. In Dallas, the North Texas hub scored an overall livability ranking of No. 12, a lovability ranking of No. 11 and a prosperity ranking of No. 4; not to be bested, Houston trailed slightly behind with No. 16, No. 8 and No. 8 ranks in those categories, respectively.
“The perception of Texas as a place to build a career is not a marketing claim but a migration reality that has been compounding for years and showing up in county-level income data,” Resonance wrote in its analysis.
So, where did Austin ultimately fall? The Texas capital just missed a Top 10 position, instead coming in at No. 11 in the U.S. When evaluating individual metrics, Austin scored a No. 10 livability rank, a No. 17 lovability rank and a No. 6 prosperity rank. Meanwhile, San Antonio trailed further behind but still clinched a Top 25 position, ranking at No. 24.
