Cool front brings brief relief before heat returns

  • June 22, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A cold front pushing through the area early Monday morning will bring a break from the recent heat, with cooler easterly winds keeping temperatures notably lower than Sunday’s 106°. However, this relief will be short-lived as a dome of high pressure settles in, sending temperatures climbing back into the lower 100s by Tuesday and continuing through the weekend.

What to expect Monday

The cold front has entered the South Plains, as of 9 a.m. it was in the southern portion of the viewing area. Low-level cloud cover has increased, with easterly winds persisting through most of the day.

Highs Monday will vary across the region. Northern zones are expected to warm only into the 80s, which will be a significant drop from Sunday’s heat. Southern areas will be warmer, with highs reaching into the 90s, though still cooler than the previous day. A few locations off to the south could approach 100 degrees.

Light rain showers are possible during the day as a zone of modest lift develops behind the front. However, surface-based thunderstorms are unlikely for most of Monday due to a cooler air mass and substantial capping.

KCBDKCBD(KCBD)Storm chances Monday night

A strengthening low-level jet could support isolated to scattered thunderstorm development near and after sunset Monday evening, especially off the Caprock. While it’s uncertain how widespread this activity might be or how long it persists, conditions could support a few strong storms capable of large hail and heavy rain late Monday night.

KCBDKCBD(KCBD)The week ahead

Slim storm chances continue Tuesday through Friday as high pressure dominates the pattern, though daily chances for mostly late-day and evening thunderstorms remain possible over portions of the forecast area.

Temperatures will rebound significantly, with highs climbing into the lower 100s Tuesday and remaining well above normal through the weekend.
