TEXAS — Many parts of the state of Texas saw some much-needed rain in recent weeks. But in Wimberly, the home of popular tourist spot Jacob’s Well, drought has caused the well-known Texas destination to close for another year.
This marks four summers in a row that swimming has been closed.
Jacob’s Well Natural Area is an 81-acre park in Wimberly. What once brought folks from all over the country is now almost all dried up.
Officials with Jacob’s Well Natural Area said they noticed a temporary upswing last week. However, the flow already dropped back down to near zero.
They added that during that time, a private landowner downstream closed a dam, which artificially raised water levels. Officials said it made levels look a little misleading because the flow is actually very low.
At this time, officials have no plans to open up swimming at the well this summer, although they will continue to monitor flow rates closely. Swimming was first suspended back in 2022 due to the years-long drought and dropping levels in the Trinity Aquifer that reduced the spring’s flow and depth.
The natural area remains open for hiking and viewing.
