LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The inaugural Lubbock Sacred Harp Convention will take place June 26-28, drawing singers from across the country to perform shape note music.
The convention will feature participants from Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, New Mexico and across Texas.
A singing school and welcome reception will be held Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at 2807 42nd St.
The convention will meet Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28, at 9 a.m. both days at the 6666 Barn of the National Ranching Heritage Center, 3121 4th St. Dinner on the grounds will be served each day at noon as a potluck.
No experience is required for the event. Admission is free.
Sacred Harp is a tradition that brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. Participants sit in a hollow square formation with one voice part on each side, all facing inward. Visitors are welcome to sit anywhere in the room and participate as listeners.
The tradition was born from colonial singing schools whose purpose was to teach beginners to sing. No musical experience or religious affiliation is required.
A regular weekly singing takes place every Sunday at 4 p.m. at 2807 42nd St.
