The Dallas Mavericks are hiring University of Michigan coach Dusty May to lead their franchise. May led the Wolverines to the 2026 NCAA Championship. Shams Charania of ESPN reported the news:
University of Michigan coach Dusty May has agreed to become the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN. Major college-to-pro jump for the 2026 NCAA championship coach and swing for the Mavericks and Masai Ujiri.
The Mavericks will buy out May’s Michigan contract to procure his services.
This is the franchise’s third major move in recent months after hiring Ujiri as team president and wooing Portland Trail Blazers assistant general manager Mike Schmitz to become their team president.
Of note for Blazers fans, the Mavericks did not hire Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, who was reportedly high on their list of candidates. Nori has also been tabbed as a finalist for Portland’s open head coaching position.
