A beloved grocery giant is moving forward with its multi-million-dollar investment in San Antonio. H-E-B is getting the ball rolling on expanding its local distribution facility, which will pave the way for more customers across the state to get its products.

The company submitted a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) filing for the project on Friday, June 19. Online records indicate the company plans to build a new bakery production facility, warehouse and distribution center on the city’s Eastside. H-E-B is investing $125 million in the upgrades. 

Folks living near the Lakeside neighborhood will be among the first to see construction kick off. Crews will begin working on site at 711 South Foster Road, near the City of China Grove, on Wednesday, July 1, according to the TDLR report. The team will focus on constructing “Building 04” on the land, which will cover 356,354 square feet.

The filing comes just weeks after the “store that does more” announced a $700 million supply chain expansion. At the time of the announcement, the company said it could not confirm whether the investment would take place at the Foster Road campus or elsewhere.

However, in an email statement on Monday, June 22, H-E-B spokesperson Valentino Lucio confirmed to MySA that it is part of the aforementioned plan. Other tasks will include the addition of a refrigerated warehouse and a transportation building, according to a press release.

These structures will stand on 870 acres of land that the chain has owned since roughly 2018. Upon completion, it will be H-E-B’s most expensive manufacturing and supply chain investment and the largest industrial investment in the area. A completion date is tentatively scheduled for September 2028, per the TDLR report.

Aside from furthering the business’ reputation as an economic powerhouse, it will create opportunities for locals. H-E-B says it will create 720 jobs by 2028 and more than 1,200 full-time positions in the next decade. 

“We look forward to advancing our plans to grow our supply chain operations, a project that reaffirms our commitment to be an economic engine for our great state,” Carson Landsgard, H-E-B Chief Supply Chain Officer, wrote in a statement.
