LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It hasn’t been quite as hot today as yesterday, thanks to an outflow boundary (think mini cold front) that moved across the area this morning. In fact, at mid-afternoon it’s in the 80s north of Lubbock in the Panhandle. The wind has since shifted out of the SE this afternoon, with a lot of humidity in place.
Storm potential tonight
There could be an isolated storm that develops in our area through late afternoon. But with it not as hot as yesterday, this chance is pretty slim.

Looking west, scattered thunderstorms have developed over the mountains and higher terrain of New Mexico, west of U.S. 285. There have been a few severe warnings out that way.
We expect these storms to continue moving east, eventually getting to the state line close to sunset. The computer model below is a little faster than others, but gives the general idea. At the same time, the farther east storms move, there will be less support for these to continue.

If you’re west of Lubbock, it’s a better chance you’ll get some rain tonight.
Looking to the west. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Northeast New Mexico, including Curry and Roosevelt counties. The watch runs until 10 p.m. MT/11 p.m. CT.

A severe thunderstorm watch means severe weather is possible. Warnings will be issued when severe weather is happening.
Back here to our area…while not everyone will see a thunderstorm, the ingredients are in place for damaging wind and possibly hail. There is less shear (twisting of the wind with height), leading to a lower hail risk than yesterday. Most storms yesterday didn’t produce a lot of hail, but the storms near Cone, on the Floyd-Crosby county line, and in Levelland both produced very large hail. Some reported baseball-sized hail in Levelland.

Tomorrow will be hot, high near 100. There will still be a good bit of humidity in place.

The weekend will be really hot, around 101-102. Then it will drop back by a few degrees for the last days of June. But, no surprise, summertime heat is hear to stay.

App update
Several people have let us know radar isn’t working on our KCBD First Alert Weather App. We apologize for a bug in the app. It’s not happening for everyone, but if this is you…hopefully this will resolve it.
Look for an update in your app store. If it’s not showing there, search for the app and see if there is an update listed. You should see version 6.2 (specifically on my phone it shows 6.2.517). It looks like 6.1 is the version with a bug.
If you don’t see an update, or this doesn’t resolve the radar issue, please delete the app then re-install. Hopefully this gets radar functioning again.
Several people have told us this is the only app they use, and it’s critical when storms are out there. I apologize that we let you down with this bug in the app.
