KAUFMAN, Texas — An 18-year-old man accused of a fatal shooting in North Texas last April was arrested in Arizona and charged with capital murder Friday afternoon, police say.
According to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, Diego Rodriguez was arrested at about 3 p.m. in Douglas, Arizona, after months of investigation.

“Today’s arrest is the result of countless hours of investigative work and the unwavering commitment of our deputies, investigators, and law enforcement partners,” Kaufman County Sheriff Bryan Beavers said in a statement. “I want to thank every agency involved for their dedication and cooperation in bringing this suspect into custody. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family as we continue seeking justice in this case.”
Warrants for Rodriguez’s arrest were first issued on April 2, the day after two other 18-year-olds were shot and killed, Kace Leatherwood and Luis Velez. Leatherwood later died from his injuries. Deputies were first called to the shooting at about 10 p.m. April 1 in the area of County Road 103.
