It’s still a while in the making, but H-E-B is reportedly bringing the discount grocery Joe V’s Smart Shop to south Houston.
According to a recent Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing, the upcoming location will land in South Houston plaza in the Edgebrook area. The $14,497,257 project will land at 10525 Gulf Freeway and is set for completion in 2028, with construction starting at the beginning of next year. (TDLR filings are subject to change.)
The popular discount offshoot of H-E-B will clock in at 56,624 square feet. But to do so, it appears that they’ll be demolishing a portion of the plaza that’s been vacant of late, previously housing an Office Depot, according to Houston Historic Retail. H-E-B declined to comment on the upcoming location.
Situated near Hobby Airport, the immediate area also includes a Fiesta Mart and a Walmart.
Joe V’s first opened in 2010 on the heels of the Great Recession, when families were tightening their budgets. The stores are often smaller than traditional H-E-Bs and offer less variety to cut down on costs.
Since launching the concept, H-E-B has opened 14 Joe V’s locations across the Houston and Dallas areas. Most locations are in the Houston area, where the format got its start. Low prices are the overarching message at Joe V’s locations, where you’ll often encounter signage that says things like “Because we buy a lot, you save a lot,” and “Low prices today, low prices tomorrow.”
For this Houston location in particular, that tomorrow is about two years away.
