The airline said the positions affected are primarily at its Fort Worth headquarters.
FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines announced Tuesday it is laying off a small number of its staff, a move it says will optimize its performance and improve efficiency.
The Fort Worth-based airline said most of the affected positions are at its headquarters.Â
“We remain focused on continuing to invest in areas that support American’s long-term business objectives, and these targeted investments will be made thoughtfully to position our airline for continued success,” a statement from American Airlines reads.
It’s not known at this time exactly how many employees have been laid off.
The move comes after a third-quarter earnings report, where the airline reported a net loss of $114 million. This is in spite of also reporting a record third-quarter revenue of $13.7 billion.
“By the end of this year, the company expects it will have fully restored its share of indirect revenue that was impacted by its former sales strategy,” the airline stated in its report. “American is now shifting focus to expanding its share of indirect revenue beyond historical levels, which, combined with improved distribution capabilities, is expected to produce meaningful value for the airline.
The airline said the third quarter included “a difficult operating environment due to significant weather events” as well as an FAA technology outage in September, along with associated air traffic control challenges.
“Thanks to investments in technology and its operating systems, American quickly recovered from irregular operations in the quarter and successfully mitigated the impact to customers,” the airline stated.
American has announced a number of upgrades recently, including a new “recliner in the sky” luxury service and renovations to its regional fleet.
