LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock Matadors SC are now looking to gain more points in the USL 2 Ranger Division standings. Fresh off gaining one in Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with the McKinney Chupacabras, the club will seek out a win Saturday night when Texhoma FC comes to town. This will also be the second outing with interim head coach Duvan Canchila.
The Matadors scored first when forward Momo Diop broke past the Chupacabra defenders for an easy goal in the 34th minute. Even though McKinney equalized in the second half, the club managed to salvage a draw despite being down one player late in the game after a red card was issued.
“I think we should have won that game (against McKinney), I think we deserved to win that game. McKinney is a really good team, and they also play a good game, but I think we created more chances that we should have finished,” Canchila said. “And I think the way they have approached it and the way they have trained all sense through the week and all that is going to put us in a really good spot against Texoma, which is another good team.”
While the Matadors enter Saturday night’s game with a record of 3-4-2, Texhoma FC is 5-3. Whenever the two clubs met three weeks ago in Denison, Texhoma escaped with a 2-1 win. Canchila says he looks forward to the upcoming rematch since they are now more familiar with their opponent.
“I think having more information about the team, it’s important. I think once you play with them one time and then you see them again, you already know. These trends, habits, the players they use, things like that, so I think that made us better. But at the same time, they know about us as well, so I think it’s going to be a really good game. I think it’s going to be competitive.”
Canchila is filling in for David Ormiston, who was put on administrative leave Tuesday evening. The interim head coach says he’s pleased with how the players have come together in the last few days on and off the pitch.
“I think the guys have responded well. I think the guys needed (Wednesday night’s performance) as well. We were gone for a long time and now we have a back-to-back at home,” he said. “We give everything, every game, but I think the home games just feel different. More energy, more excitement, more everything, so it’s so good to be back home, back-to-back, and show what we know.”
Saturday’s first kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park and is “Community Give Back Night”.
“We hope to see everyone out there on Saturday,” Canchila says, “That’s the real reason why we do this. It’s them. We compete for them. We want to put the show there for them, and at the end of the day, everything we do is for the community, for the fans, for the people that keep showing up, for the people that support us. So we hope to see a lot of people out there, and I think it’s going to be a great game.”
