LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock City Council District 4 special election is headed to a runoff after neither candidate secured a majority on Saturday.
Tim Green led the field with 47% of the vote. Gary Boren finished second with 38%. The two will advance to a runoff.
Bill Curnow issued a statement endorsing Green on Sunday.
Green touts growth, outside revenue
Green is a homebuilder and former Lubbock firefighter. He has described himself as the “pro growth” candidate.
“I think we need somebody in the city council seat that has that experience of growth, that knows what direction the city is growing,” Green said. “Bringing in new revenue, different streams of revenue, lessen the burden off of our current taxpayers. Growth and new revenue lessens the burden and helps lower taxes and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Boren points to experience in keeping costs down
Boren is running on experience. He previously served on the Lubbock City Council in the early 2000s, on the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees, and currently serves on the Brazos River Authority.
Boren won a court decision against the city of Lubbock to appear on the ballot after the city challenged whether he had lived in District 4 long enough.
“I have four years experience with water, electric, development, public safety, I know what to do and we’ve been through this before,” Boren said. “And if we don’t do this the cost to a homeowner is going to be tremendous, your taxes will go up, and I know how to hold those costs down. Your electric costs are already out the ceiling, you have the highest electric costs in the state of Texas, we’ve got over a billion dollars of debt, I need to get in there and help protect our homeowners.”
What’s next
The City Council will canvass the election results at its next meeting.
The special election was triggered after District 4 Councilman Braden Rose announced he was stepping down to spend time with his family.
