A Texas man faces charges after an assault left a man with serious injuries early Sunday morning.

Jesus Leyva Jr., 19, of Perryton, Texas, is charged in Buffalo County Court with first-degree assault.

According to an arrest affidavit, just before 1 a.m. Sunday, Kearney Police were called to Big Apple Fun Center, 500 W. Fourth St., for a report of a man who was lying on the ground by the front door, bleeding from an assault and there was running down the sidewalk.

When officers arrived on scene, they said they found a large amount of blood on the sidewalk, but did not locate the victim.

The affidavit said KPD later located the victim at New Victorian Inn and Suites, 903 Second Ave. He was transported to CHI Health-Good Samaritan where doctors said he had multiple orbital fractures, nasal fractures, multiple lacerations and a concussion.

KPD said officers later obtained cell phone and security video where they determined Leyva Jr. and the victim were involved in a mutual fight where the victim was knocked unconscious. Witnesses told police Leyva Jr. “sucker punched” the victim while he was lying unconscious on the ground.

Leyva Jr. was later located at Tractor Supply, 415 Third Ave., where he was arrested and booked into the Buffalo County Jail.

On Tuesday, a judge set Leyva Jr.’s bond at $100,000, 10% of which he would need to post to be released from jail. His next court hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 18.
