This week, Chron is unveiling a list that is bound to create some discourse. Texas 250: Who Shaped Texas is Chron’s swing at telling the story of Texas since America’s birth in 1776. We’ve come up with a list of 250 people—Texas natives and those who made their mark right here in the Lone Star State—ranking them by influence, impact, popularity, and the spirit and identity that makes them quintessentially Texan.
We’re unveiling the full list and readers’ picks at 10 a.m. Wednesday. We’ll also tell you who Chron readers selected as the most influential Texans of all-time. So, it’s time to make your voice heard and take part.
You can vote each day for up to five people who you think are the greatest Texans of all-time. For each round of voting, we’ll select one voter at random to win a $50 gas card.
Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday we’ll unveil our reader’s picks for the greatest Texan of all-time.
We’ve also unveiled our picks in those categories, but not all in ranked order. The full ranking will come Wednesday.
There ain’t a better way to follow along with Texas 250 than by joining up with Chron’s latest newsletter. Gwen Howerton curates and writes Y’all Heard?, which offers a weekly buffet of discourse about Texas’ most compelling people, stories and cultural flashpoints.
Subscribers to Y’all Heard will get immediate access to all the stories we’re producing as part of the Texas 250. Plus, Y’all Heard? subscribers will get early access to the full list ahead of the public drop on July 1.
Our staff comprises native Texans, longtime residents of the Lone Star State and newcomers with fresh opinions and insight. We spent months brainstorming, researching, debating and sorting our list, ending up with a ranking we feel represents the last 250 years of life down here in the home we now call Texas.
