CANTON, Texas (KLTV) – Gov. Greg Abbott campaigned in East Texas on Monday, making a re-election stop at Ochoa’s Cafe in Canton.
Supporters packed the restaurant to hear his future plans if he wins re-election.
Abbott spoke about issues including the border wall and data centers, but focused largely on what he called a five-point property tax relief plan.
“None of you, nor anyone else in the state of Texas has come up to me and said, ‘Hey Governor, I am perfectly happy with my property tax bill,’ because you’re not,” Abbott said. “Your property taxes should never go up without you having a say in the matter.”
Elements of the five-point plan include:
Require local spending limits. Require two-thirds voter approval for tax increases.Allow petitions to force a rollback election to lower rates. Create appraisal predictability and cap appraisal growth. Eliminate school district property taxes on homeowners.
The event drew mostly positive reactions from attendees, though a small group protested outside over A.I. data centers.
Abbott is scheduled to make another East Texas campaign stop Tuesday in Bullard.
