Dog owners in Dallas-Fort Worth looking to mingle with their furry friends in tow are losing a favorite venue.
Mutts Canine Cantina, a popular bar and grill that doubled as a dog park, is closing down effective immediately, the business announced on social media Monday.
“After nearly 15 years, we’ve had a great run with Mutts in Dallas and Fort Worth, and it’s time to shift our focus to our other brands,” Co-founder Kyle Noonan wrote in a statement to The Dallas Morning News. “We still own the Mutts name and don’t know what’s next for it — but today we’re simply grateful. Thank you to our team, our guests, and every dog who made it special.”
The company did not provide a reason for the closure.
Mutts operated two locations in the D-FW region: one on Cityplace West Boulevard in Dallas’ Uptown neighborhood and one on Clearfork Main Street in Fort Worth. Both are closed as of Monday.
The business once had additional locations in Allen and Austin, though they appear to have closed previously. Mutts representatives did not respond to a request for clarification on the timeline of location closures.
The brand thrived as a casual hangout, featuring a bar and restaurant that served burgers and sandwiches to pet owners watching from a deck as their furry companions played in the yard. In addition to everyday gatherings, it was a popular venue for canine birthday parties and other animal-themed festivities over the years.
Mutts was built on a membership model. Visitors could purchase a day pass or monthly pass to get access to the park, where pups could play with their pals. The business also offered annual memberships: $249.50 for single-dog owners and $349.50 to get access for two or three pups.
Prices had risen over the years. In 2019, a monthly pass went for $16.95. By April of this year, it was up nearly 50% to $24.95.
All memberships have been automatically canceled, according to an email the company sent to members on Monday morning. Because memberships renew on different dates, Mutts will issue prorated refunds to members based on their remaining unused time. They will be processed within 30 business days.
Members of the Mutts team are affiliated with dog-friendly patios at The Rustic and Joe Leo Fine Tex Mex, both in Dallas. Those venues will remain operating, according to the email sent to Mutts members.
