The final domino has fallen for Texas softball’s staff with the hiring of assistant coach Amber Freeman, formerly at Arizona.
Following Texas’ second consecutive national championship, both of the Longhorns’ associate head coaches announced their departures from the program, prompting head coach Mike White to reshape not only his roster while the transfer portal was open but also his coaching staff.
During her two-year tenure at Arizona, Freeman established herself as a solid hitting coach, leading her team to a .340 batting average, which ranked third in the Big 12 Conference. She will oversee Texas’ offense while also working with the catchers and the team’s defense, according to a Texas Athletics press release.
Freeman helped transform the Wildcats into one of the Big 12’s most productive offensive teams during the 2026 season. Against conference opponents, Arizona ranked highly with 478 hits and 364 RBIs in 1406 at-bats.
Her impact was equally evident in 2025, when Arizona led the Big 12 in nearly every major offensive category, including a .348 batting average, 82 home runs, a .571 slugging percentage and a .437 on-base percentage.
In her two years spent in Tucson, Arizona, Freeman ushered her team to an 85–31 record after its departure from the Pac-12 Conference in 2024.
After closing her collegiate career as a decorated catcher at Arizona State, Freeman played a central role in the development of Sydney Stewart, Arizona senior catcher and utility, in 2026, with the athlete earning Big 12 Player of the Year and National Fastpitch Coaches Association First-Team All-American honors. Throughout her 55 starts, Stewart hit 20 homers and accumulated 76 RBIs, racking up a .866 slugging percentage.
The Longhorns faced the Wildcats twice during the 2026 season at the DeMarini Invitational. Arizona, ranked No. 16 nationally at the time, could not manage the upset and lost to Texas 12-2 twice.
Arizona was unable to reach the ultimate dream of playing for a championship at Devon Park in Oklahoma City after falling to Duke in the Durham Regional.
Freeman now inherits a Texas offense that will feature new faces in the lineup while maintaining the skills of veterans who already brought new hardware back to Austin. With the hiring of Freeman, White has completed another step towards preparing the Longhorns for the 2027 season.
