The former assistant county attorney was arrested last Friday after a traffic stop in downtown Corpus Christi led to drug charges.
The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the driver as Jaime Garza, 72. 3NEWS confirmed Garza resigned from his position on Monday.
According to DPS, a trooper stopped Garza at about 2:40 p.m. June 26 after observing a traffic violation involving a 2020 Dodge Ram on Chaparral Street, east of Interstate 37.
During the stop, the trooper suspected drugs were being concealed in the vehicle and requested a DPS narcotics K-9.
Before the K-9 search was conducted, Garza admitted there was marijuana inside the truck, according to DPS.
That admission gave the trooper probable cause to search the vehicle. DPS said the search uncovered marijuana along with additional controlled substances.
Garza was arrested and booked into the Nueces County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
DPS did not release additional information about the type or quantity of the controlled substances allegedly found.
