ELM MOTT, Texas (KWTX) -The countdown to the Fourth of July comes with a bonus day this year. Texas is extending the legal window for fireworks sales — giving celebrants more time to stock up as the nation gears up for “America 250,” the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
In past years, statewide fireworks sales were permitted from June 24 through July 4. But Senate Bill 996 extends that window through midnight on July 5, allowing shoppers one more day to make purchases.
Dan Fitzgerald, owner of Stars and Stripes Fireworks in Elm Mott, said the extra day is a win for both customers and shop owners.
“It’s actually quite exciting for us,” Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald said the extension also gives customers time to test their plans on July 4 — then come back the next day to buy more fireworks for upcoming celebrations if they want a similar display.
As the country marks the holiday, Fitzgerald said sales are already higher than last year, citing the timing of the Fourth and added interest tied to America 250.
He’s also seeing customers go bigger.
“What we’re seeing is larger displays,” Fitzgerald said. “People are wanting to shoot aerials that go into the sky. … And a lot of big parties where families are coming in and stuff like that.”
When buying fireworks, ensure it is from permitted vendors. Check local regulations before purchasing or shooting off fireworks.
