Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11th and you know El Paso, being a military town, will have different things going on al over the place to honor the brave men and women who have served their country.

Heartfelt thanks to all Vets from myself and all of us here at KLAQ and Townsquare Media, El Paso.

Veterans Day History

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day to honor the cease fire that signaled the end of WW I. It was initiated on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The Treaty of Versailles would officially end the war 1 year later.

In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Wilson intended the day to be marked by parades, public meetings, and a brief suspension of business activities at 11:00 a.m. He envisioned it as a day to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served in the war and to remind Americans of the costs of peace. – flagladyusa

In 1926, Congress passed a resolution that Armistice Day should be honored with special, public ceremonies to remind Americans of the “price of peace”. In 1938, Congress made November 11th a legal holiday.

In 1954, POTUS Eisenhower changed the name of the holiday to Veteran’s Day to make the day inclusive of all veterans, no matter the war or “conflict” they served during.

3 Day Weekends

In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved a bunch of holidays to Monday, pretty much just to set up 3 day weekends. Veterans Day became the 4th Monday in October and people were not happy. So unhappy that, in 1975, POTUS Ford moved it back to 11/11 effective November 11, 1978.
