After more than a decade of delays and controversy, the Texas-based travel giant will open in 2027, ending years of uncertainty over one of the most highly anticipated developments in the region, USA Today reported. The new location has been touted by Boerne leaders as one of the most accessible and “environmentally conscious” of the rapidly expanding beaver-fronted empire’s gas stations.
The USA Today report states that Boerne is among six other sites slated to open a location next year, but it does not list a specific opening date. The project was delayed by several years due to zoning issues, public pushback and complications with a Texas Department of Transportation interstate expansion.
Currently, it appears that very little construction has taken place at the future Buc-ee’s site in Boerne. After filing construction permits in 2023, residents briefly spotted crews performing initial roadwork in 2025.
Last fall, Buc-ee’s made several concessions to limit the size and environmental impact of the 53,000-square-foot travel center, following months of community pushback. These concessions allowed the city and the developer to look ahead to the long-delayed project’s arrival.
In January, city leaders approved a traffic impact analysis for the development, bringing it one step closer to construction. In February, Boerne spokesperson Chris Shadrock told MySA the city was reviewing construction application permits for the project, though there’s no word on how long that review will take. Shadrock said the review timeline was based on Buc-ee’s response time.
“Once they meet all city and state requirements, the permits will be approved,” Shadrock shared.
Buc-ee’s chose not to comment to MySA at this time.
The chain is expanding across the United States, with recent openings in Louisiana and Ohio, a swanky new San Marcos location nearing completion and plans to open 15 new locations by 2031.
The new Buc-ee’s store will be located at I-10 and U.S. 87 Business, Boerne, TX 78006.
