ARLINGTON, Texas — Egypt moved past Australia in its first World Cup knockout-round match and advanced after winning a penalty shootout 4-2 following a 1-1 draw.
Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the deciding penalty for Egypt in Arlington as the team earned the shootout victory in its fourth World Cup appearance.
Australia made a late goalkeeper change in extra time. Mathew Ryan replaced starter Patrick Beach, but he did not stop any of Egypt’s four penalty attempts.
The result marked Egypt’s first win in the knockout round of the tournament. Australia fell to 0-3 in knockout-round matches.
