Bojangles, a fast food chain known for its fried chicken sandwiches, buttery biscuits and other southern fixings, plans to open three more San Antonio locations within the next six months – including one in the Alamo Ranch area this fall.

Local franchisee Terrence Thames is working to remodel a former Arby’s on Culebra Road, just west of its crossing with Westwood Loop, he said in a phone interview on Friday. The remodel is expected to cost $650,000, according to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

“Alamo Ranch is a very highly populated area,” Thames said, explaining the appeal of the Culebra site. “You can tell just by the traffic there on a regular basis. We thought for coming into the San Antonio market, that would be a key place to put our brand at on that road.”

It will be the North Carolina-based chain’s third franchise location in the Alamo City.

Thames and a business partner own the existing two – including one which opened on the Southwest Side in April – and they plan to open a fourth restaurant this fall at the crossing of FM 78 and Walzem Road, in Converse, he said.

By early next year, Thames and his business partner – operating through the entity Jingle Jangle LLC – expect to open a Bojangles in a former Taco Cabana at the crossing of Loop 410 and Bandera Road, on the Northwest Side.

They are also working on opening the chain’s first restaurants in Corpus Christi and the city of Weslaco in the Rio Grande Valley, he said.

They are on track to build about 28 Bojangles restaurants over the next eight years in their franchise territory, which also includes Laredo, Kerrville and New Braunfels, Thames said. That includes a total of between 15 to 17 restaurants in the San Antonio area, he said.
