A San Antonio police officer is recovering after a shoplifting incident at a local Walmart took a violent turn Friday evening. Authorities said the officer was stabbed while attempting to handcuff the alleged shoplifter.
The incident happened around 7:48 p.m. on July 3, 2026, at the Walmart in the 2100 block of Southeast Loop 410, according to a San Antonio Police Department incident report.
SAPD said the officer was helping Walmart security after a 35-year-old woman was detained on suspicion of shoplifting. That’s when the woman tried to run as the officer was finishing paperwork.
When the officer moved to handcuff her, she allegedly pulled out a weapon and stabbed him in the head. He suffered minor injuries and drove himself to a nearby hospital, where he was treated.
The woman was taken into custody at the scene and is expected to be charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer. Police have not released her identity or said what type of weapon was used.
It was not immediately clear whether she will also face charges related to the alleged shoplifting. The investigation remains ongoing.
