Traffic relief may be on the horizon for far north Fort Worth motorists.
Construction is expected to start in January to widen a vital east-west two-lane artery in a booming area near Eagle Mountain Lake where thousands of homes were built and more are planned.
Since spring, crews have been relocating utilities in preparation of the yearlong plan to widen WJ Boaz Road, which runs from U.S. Business Highway 287/North Saginaw Boulevard to FM 1220/Boat Club Road.
The $27.3 million project will expand WJ Boaz Road to four lanes, city officials said.
“Mobility will be aided in that the WJ Boaz Road will be widened to four lanes from Boat Club Road to Elkins School Road,” city spokesperson Lara Ingram said.
There will also be roundabout improvements at Bowman Roberts Road, she said.
Construction will improve about 10,200 square feet of the road with new pavement, drainage, traffic signals and streetlights, as well as include water and sewer upgrades. The work should be completed by Jan. 1, 2027, according to a state filing.
Last month, crews completed a new 10-foot sidewalk along WJ Boaz near Bufflehead Drive. That project cost about $80,000.
The work at Bowman Roberts Road will alter the existing two-way stop sign to create a mini-roundabout. Construction will include new sidewalks and accessibility ramps as well as improvements to ditches and a drainage culvert beneath the pavement.
Funding for the road improvements includes $12.3 million from the 2022 bond election, $10.7 million from Tarrant County’s 2021 transportation bond and $4.3 million from other funding sources.
The project’s completion is expected in spring 2029.
