Class is in session. Everything is bigger in Texas, and so, too is its educated workforce in one of the Lone Star State’s premier cities.
The Texas capital of Austin doesn’t only double as the Live Music Capital of the World — it’s also revered as a Top 10 most educated city in America, according to a new report from WalletHub published on Monday, June 29. The report analyzed the 150 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. across nearly a dozen factors, including bachelor’s degree attainment, the quality of local public school systems and the size of their gender education gap.
The study named Austin as home to the ninth most educated workforce, the only Texas city to crack into the Top 50 in the country. Earning a total score of 76.46 out of 100, the capital metro area received an individual educational attainment rank of No. 10 and a No. 4 position for its quality of education and attainment gap.
Which cities bested Austin for the top honors? Ann Arbor, Michigan took home the crown at No. 1, with an overall score of 94.48 championed by its No. 1 educational attainment rank and No. 2 quality of education and attainment gap.
The closest Texas counterpart to Austin was up in North Texas courtesy the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, ranked at No. 67. Houston came in afterwards at No. 88, while San Antonio eked into the Top 100 at No. 100.
“The most educated cities provide good learning opportunities from childhood all the way through the graduate level,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in the report. “In addition to overall education, it’s also important to look at how well cities promote educational equality when it comes to race and gender.”
