A coordinated holiday crackdown by Dallas authorities kept nearly a ton of illegal explosives off the streets this Fourth of July, according to local police.
In two separate holiday operations on Saturday, July 4, the Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) Arson Division and the Dallas Police Department say they confiscated more than 1,800 pounds of fireworks and issued multiple citations.
The larger of the two busts occurred around 5 p.m. on Elsie Faye Heggins Street, near Second Avenue. Following up on investigative leads, arson investigators and police officers discovered suspects operating an illicit fireworks marketplace straight out of a U-Haul truck and a van.
According to a news release, authorities seized over 1,400 pounds of fireworks from the vehicles. Two citations were issued at the scene, and DFR’s Inspections Division was called in to transport the massive haul to a secured location.
Just a few hours later, DFR inspectors and Southeast Patrol officers say they conducted a second, unrelated enforcement action on Penelope Street.
That operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 400 pounds of illegal fireworks with one citation issued for possession.
The possession and sale of fireworks are strictly prohibited within Dallas city limits. In the Sunday news release, officials reiterated that these crackdowns are vital for public safety, noting that illegal fireworks pose severe risks to neighborhoods, including devastating fires, traumatic injuries, and widespread property damage.
Both incidents remain under active investigation by Dallas authorities.
