Prepare for delays, San Antonio. A notoriously congested highway is expected to produce more traffic headaches for drivers as they adjust to a new road pattern initiated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
Beginning Monday, July 6, at 9 a.m., the eastbound (EB) Loop 1604 entrance ramp after the I-10 interchange will be permanently shut down, the agency said in a press release. The closure will affect travelers who often make their way past the Rim.
TxDOT says it’s necessary so that its crews can perform a ramp reconfiguration at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. The agency will be building a new exit ramp to Vance Jackson Road.
Drivers on the EB Loop 1604 frontage road who are looking to access the EB Loop 1604 mainlanes will continue on the EB Loop 1604 frontage road to the next available entrance ramp, TxDOT says.
The shutdown is a scheduled part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project — a $1.4 billion investment in 23 miles of road improvements, which aim to “increase mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety on one of the most congested corridors in the state,” per TxDOT.
It includes six construction segments along the Loop 1604 corridor from SH 16 (Bandera Rd.) to I-35. The Texas Transportation Commission designated the Loop 1604 North Expansion project as part of the statewide Texas Clear Lanes initiative, organized to address the most congested areas in the state. The plan as a whole has an estimated completion year of 2028.
