LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock County road crews spent the Fourth of July weekend picking up trash left along county roads following America’s 250th Independence Day celebration.
Video obtained Monday showed litter along East 50th Street near the turnoff to Buffalo Springs Lake.
County Judge Curtis Parrish said county road and bridge crews, City of Lubbock crews near the boundary line, and TxDOT crews are all working to address the cleanup — each on their respective roadways. Parrish said all are being pulled away from their regular duties to pick up trash.
“It seems like a very simple thing to ask people to do. But, it’s really such a burden on this county because we, our road and bridge crew has to get out there, and they’re all out there today and they’ve been out all weekend, just picking up people’s trash,” Parrish said.
Parrish said the county places dumpsters in some areas, including near fireworks stands, but does not have enough resources to place them everywhere. He also said sheriff’s deputies patrol a large area and cannot spend their entire night issuing fines for littering.
Parrish said fire department reports were relatively quiet Saturday following recent rain. He said celebrating with fireworks is acceptable, but asked residents to clean up after themselves.
