The Lone Star State’s biggest burger chain is expanding its presence in Central Texas. Whataburger is planning to build a $2.5 million restaurant in a small town, known as a growing tech hub, outside of Austin.
This comes as the Corpus Christi-born fast food giant prepares to bring back its iconic orange-and-white A-frame designs at new restaurants across the state. Although it’s unclear if this new Whataburger in Bastrop will have the chain’s upgraded architecture integrated into its design, there could be a possibility.
Construction on the new Whataburger locations across the country is expected to begin later this year, with openings slated for early 2027. According to the TDLR, construction on the future Bastrop Whataburger is planned to begin on August 3 and is expected to be finished by the end of December, which could mean an early 2027 opening.
The scope of work for the project includes the “construction of a new 3,800-square-foot fast food restaurant with sit in dining and drive-thru service.” All TDLR filings are subject to change at any time.
But Bastrop isn’t the only Whataburger location in the Austin-area that the company has planned to upgrade this year. In January, the chain filed TDLR plans for a $2 million renovation/alteration to one of its East Austin restaurants.
