After months of speculation, a popular grocery chain has been confirmed to be coming to San Antonio, according to a recent state filing. The company, Costco’s biggest rival, is investing millions of dollars in a new location on the Far Westside.
The Arkansas-headquartered bulk retailer Sam’s Club is expanding its footprint in the city with a new project at 3007 W. Loop 1604 S., near the Spurs Ranch and Village at Big Country neighborhoods.
Plans for the property were disclosed in a report filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) on Tuesday, July 2. According to the filing, the shop will span roughly 166,000 square feet, and construction is expected to begin in November of this year.
San Antonians have come to rely on Sam’s Club for bulk products and outdoor home furniture. The business is a subsidiary of Walmart Inc. and operates on a membership-based model. It also offers some items at lower-than-average prices by displaying merchandise on shipping pallets, allowing staff to “move new items in just as quickly as they move out,” according to its website.
Currently, there are six locations in the Alamo City. The new warehouse is estimated to be completed in fall 2027. A grand opening date was not readily available when MySA contacted Walmart Inc.
“As I’m sure you understand, given where we are in the process, it’s still too early to share any specific details,” a spokesperson told us over email.
It’s not the only retailer locals can look forward to visiting. The fan-favorite Target Corporation is building its 14th location just minutes away at the southwest corner of Marbach Road and Loop 1604. Crews have already broken ground at the site, and as of late May, the land, which is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and not far from Potranco Road, appears to have been cleared and graveled. A parking lot also appears to be in the works.
Social media users have been waiting for confirmation that Sam’s Club was also heading to the highly frequented corridor. Many Texans have been discussing the possibility of its arrival since Target announced its new store. It’s unclear how the rumors started, but real estate firm Coldwell Banker Richard Ellis (CBRE) owns the land Target is building on and represents Walmart Realty in its land disposition, according to the company’s website.
When MySA reached out to Walmart Inc. at the time, a spokesperson said the company was aware of the community discussion but could not confirm a new location or share additional details. Now, the secret is out. Local real estate agent Matthew James said online that it’s a testament to the Far Westside’s continued growth.
“When a retailer like Target picks a location, it’s not a guess. They’ve already seen the data. The growth is here,” James said. “Once Target opens, watch what follows: more retail, more restaurants, more rooftops.”
