According to filings with the Harris County Clerk, a company called Bookmoor LLC purchased the property at 3509 Montrose Blvd., previously owned by now-shuttered Houston record store Soundwaves, which closed in April. Jeffrey Spargo, the owner of Soundwaves, is the signatory on the documentation. Spargo could not be reached for comment.
In a statement to Chron, Half Price Books president Kathy Doyle Thomas said that the company had indeed purchased the land from Soundwaves and plans to open a new store in 2027 in Montrose. Thomas said that the store in Montrose previously closed due to redevelopment.
“We’ve been trying to return to the neighborhood for years, so we were thrilled when we had the opportunity to purchase this building,” Thomas said. “We’ve heard from countless customers in the last five years how much they miss the Montrose store, so we’re looking forward to being back in the loop.”
The news will no doubt thrill Montrose residents mourning the closure of the 2021 store, especially considering that a vacant lot now sits on its former spot. Houston’s only Half Price Books location is currently located in Westchase in West Houston. Another location in Rice Village closed in 2020. Half Price Books, founded in 1972 and based in Dallas, has six locations scattered throughout Houston’s suburbs.
