FRISCO — Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire addressed the viral controversy that surrounded his team this spring.
No, not that one, the other one.
“Spot the ball, man, we’re ready to go right now,” McGuire said Tuesday afternoon. “We’ll play tomorrow. We don’t need any film study or anything like that, and I know they don’t either.”
The Longhorns and Red Raiders used to play regularly when both were Big 12 conference members, but after the former left for the SEC two years ago, the in-state rivalry ended. McGuire, who also praised Sarkisian as a coach and play-caller, urged for that game’s return as well as other local showdowns.
“I was born in Texarkana, Texas, at Wylie Regional Medical Center in 1971,” McGuire said. “I grew up in the Southwest Conference. Texas and Texas Tech are supposed to play. Texas and Texas A&M are supposed to play, and they are playing. SMU is supposed to play, I’d love to play Rhett Lashlee. I mean, if you’re a Texan, and you’re a fan of the football in this state, then why would we go outside the state to play nonconference games if we’re not in conference anymore?”
