LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The City of Lubbock has broken ground on a bond project to widen and rebuild Upland Ave. on the west side of the city.
The project will expand Upland Avenue from a two-lane, undivided road to a five-lane roadway between 34th and 50th St. City leaders said the work is designed to address street flooding, narrow lanes, and pedestrian safety concerns.
What the project includes
Dr. Jennifer Wilson, who represents Lubbock City Council District 5, said the improvements will include new drainage infrastructure, sidewalks, and safety upgrades.
“So you can expect to see brand new drainage out here to make sure that we don’t have water pooling on the road, new infrastructure in with sidewalks for people to be able to walk and just safety aspects,” Wilson said.
The project also includes traffic signal updates and work near a railroad crossing. Wilson said the road is expected to become a main corridor for the area.
“This will be a main thoroughfare, so you’ll see businesses lining both sides of the road and then residential areas surrounding that. So a new important way for Lubbock to grow,” Wilson said.
Mayor cites west side growth
Mayor Mark McBrayer said the project is a response to ongoing development in west Lubbock.
“In this area, a lot of new development out in this part of west Lubbock. So we need the roadway to be able to contain all the traffic that we’re going to have out here,” McBrayer said.
McBrayer said the finished road will include curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and a park strip alongside it.
“It will be a beautiful street when we’re through with it. Not just a plain street, curb and gutters, sidewalks, a little park area, stretch or strip alongside of it too,” McBrayer said.
City leaders said construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months, weather permitting.
