In Thursday’s (7/2) San Antonio Express-News, Deborah Martin writes, “Troy Peters, who has been music director of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio since 2009, will leave his post at the end of next season. Peters’ departure will come as the organization is wrapping up its 50th anniversary celebrations. He is leaving because his wife, Anne Peters, has accepted a job as vice president for marketing at the University of South Carolina…. Peters’ impact on YOSA goes beyond the music he has helped the musicians learn … ‘Troy has never viewed music education as simply preparing students for the next concert,’ Jerrod Price, YOSA’s executive director, said in a statement. ‘He has helped build an organization that prepares young people for life. Together, we’ve expanded access, challenged expectations and created opportunities that didn’t exist a generation ago,’ Price said…. In addition to the program’s growth and expansion, Peters is proud that the makeup of the YOSA is now more reflective of the city in terms of racial and ethnic makeup and socioeconomic status. ‘I think that’s been a really deliberate effort of ours, to make sure that we’re getting out and building relationships … in neighborhoods that had not been traditionally … think[ing] about this being something that’s possible for them,’ Peters said…. ‘In this 50th anniversary … we’re not done … and I’m excited about putting my all into a really great finale with YOSA.’ ”
