DALLAS – A woman is in critical condition after being shot while driving and crashing her vehicle into a parked car Tuesday night in Dallas, authorities said.

What we know:

Dallas police officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3000 block of Maryland Avenue, in the Cedar Crest area, at 8:50 p.m. Upon arrival, responding officers found a vehicle that had crashed into a parked car. Inside the crashed vehicle, officers found a woman with a gunshot wound.

Dallas fire-rescue paramedics treated the woman at the scene before taking her to a local hospital. Officials said she remains in critical condition.

Officers quickly detained a man near the area for questioning by detectives. Responding units secured a large crime scene stretching over a block long to preserve evidence. During a search of the area, officers also discovered a discarded handgun that investigators believe may have been used in the shooting.

What we don’t know:

An exact motive for the attack remains unclear early in the active investigation, according to police.
