LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – City leaders and residents said they do not know enough about proposed data centers to approve any agreements, following a community-led discussion organized by two local groups on Wednesday night.
The meeting was organized by Citizens of Lubbock Against Data Centers and Save Lubbock. Every speaker who addressed the podium expressed concern over the potential impact of the centers, including environmental factors, water and electricity usage, and possible price increases.
Clayton Tucker, the Democratic candidate for Texas attorney general, spoke at the meeting and urged residents to get involved.
“Only organized people can beat organized money,” Tucker said. “These data centers have millions of dollars they’re pouring in throughout our political system from the local level all the way to the state and federal, but only organized people can beat that organized money. So get involved — sign a petition, go form a group, join a group, just get involved, stay involved.”
Stephen Sanders, who founded Citizens of Lubbock Against Data Centers, has started a petition calling for a pause on data center development in Lubbock. If the petition receives the required 2,410 signatures by July 28, the request for a delay will go before the city council for a vote.
